Details
Páirc na nGael was opened on Sunday December 7th, 2008 by Gaelic Athletic Association(GAA) President Nicky Brennan prior to the Vodafone GAA All-Star football game. This game was contested by the top inter-county Gaelic footballers in Ireland of the past 2 years. The facilities include three regulation sized football fields spanning 13 acres, covering the space of three city blocks. Páirc na nGael is the largest field, then we have field b and Páirc na nOg. Páirc na nOg is the name of the youth field further to the east on the island, adjacent to the home grounds of the Golden Gate Rugby Club. Páirc na nGael's development was funded by financial and labor donations from the Irish community in San Francisco, plus $500,000 from the GAA in Ireland.
History
The board of Directors acquired the 13 acres from TIDA- Treasure Island Development Authority and the Navy on the Island. The lease was signed for all three fields on Feb 29th 2008.
After gaining a dig permit, drawing up plans, copious meetings, emails and phone calls, work started in earnest on Friday the 14th March 2008.
We received an extremely generous anonymous donation of $100,000 and this helped to kick start development.
Week after week the work continued and volunteers devoted their weekends to helping with the development of these new fields.
The fields required an enormous amount of work to bring them up to a top class standard.
For the next 9 months volunteers continued to work on the island and by December 1st, the fields were ready!
